The Salzburg Residenz – princely archiepiscopal splendour in the heart of the baroque town

The Salzburg Residenz, situated in the heart of the Old Town, housed the reception rooms of the prince-archbishops, emphasising their spiritual and secular power.

Audienzsaal
Carabinierisaal

This extensive building complex, which comprises some 180 rooms and three large courtyards, is first mentioned in records in 1232. The archbishops had already assumed the rank of secular princes, and during the ensuing centuries they had their residence expanded on an accordingly grand scale.
A tour with a personal audio-guide (choice of 7 languages) will take you through the styles of two centuries – Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, all united in architectural harmony.
The works of master craftspeople – wall and ceiling paintings, frescoes, stucco, period furniture, embroidery, marquetry, marble portals, many valuable clocks and paintings – bear witness to the wealth of that age.
On the third floor is the Residenzgalerie, with its comprehensive collection of paintings by European artists of the 16th-19th centuries.
