Flowers paintings permit a wide range of possible approaches: not only from the art-historical aspect (iconography, styles specific to certain periods, etc.) but also from the wealth of information from the realm of botany. The rich variety of facets displayed by such flowers paintings will be demonstrated with the plant representations in the Residenzgalerie Salzburg. (Elias van den Broeck, Cornelis de Heem, Jan Davidsz de Heem, Melchior de Hondecoeter, Vinzenz Kreuzer, Hans Makart, Kaspar Memberger d. Ä., Jean Baptiste Monnoyer, Franz Xaver Petter, Ignaz Stern, Jan van Thielen, Claude Vignon, Jan Weenix d. J. etc.) Pictures painted by artists from the 16th to the 19th centuries will serve to illustrate selected art from (flowers still life, flowers as attributes, plants that complement animal still lifes, etc.) and also the species (their countries of origin, time of importation or cultivation in Europe).
The present study is divided into a general outline of the history of plant representation and individual analyses of selected works from the Residenzgalerie Salzburg.
