Catalogue of the exhibition SENSAI WHITE - purity of form in Japanese art: 13.03.2009 - 26.04.2009

The exhibition presents historic graphic reproductions in contrast with contemporary Japanese paper art.
The so-called Ukiyo-e are coloured woodcuts from the Edo period, and with delicacy and playfulness depict pictures of the day-to-day ephemeral world. Among the outstanding masters of this period are Hokusai, Hokkei and Hiroshige. Their works in particular had an enormous influence in Europe, especially on woodcut and decorative art of art nouveau and art in the early 20th century.
The contemporary works on paper by Japanese artists show how they have absorbed the fine and graceful linear aestheticism of Ukiyo-e into their art as well as referring back to the influence of Zen Buddhism in Japanese art long before the Edo period.
SENSAI means fine, meticulous and accurate in every detail, and is a balance between abstraction and reality.
Graphic reproductions, paper objects and istallations from Austrian museums, international galleries and private collections will be shown in the exhibition.
